Status Coup Road Trip | The Other Pandemic: America

Evictions, the Working Class, and the True State of the United Corporations of America

A Reporting Trip Through Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky

People in the United States are in a SHOCKING crisis and the powers-that-be don’t care about anything that doesn’t pad their pockets.

COVID-19 isn’t over and its effects are just beginning for the average person. While billionaires became WEALTHIER throughout the pandemic, the working class was and is struggling.

The income and privilege gap has grown even wider.

For a time, there’s been a moratorium on evictions, so that at least people could stay in their homes. That protection ENDS days from now (June 30).

All. That. Money. Is. Coming. Due.

Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates are just fine–everyday people are NOT.

Status Coup’s Jordan Chariton and Jenn Dize are hitting the road to shine a light on this CRISIS–this Other Pandemic

We’re giving the microphone back to real people. Those facing eviction, those already without traditional living structures, those facing structural racism in housing, and more.

We’re doing what we do best–covering what corporate media COVERS UP!

It’s the New Great Depression

We are DETERMINED to make this trip successful. But, we need your help.

We’re dealing with untold amounts of suppression from YouTube, Twitter, and all traditional avenues for our reporting.

We’re fighting this–and we’ll continue reporting even if it comes down to us passing out pamphlets with our reporting in an alleyway.

We Need Your Help

The costs of reporting (especially on an extended road trip like this one) really add up.

Costs for three people (Jenn, Jordan, and photojournalist Jon) include gas, hotels, food, LiveU streaming costs (the device we use to go live in-the-field), equipment, and more. We’re frugal, but this adds up for a small, independent start-up like us–ESPECIALLY since we’re being suppressed and YouTube has tanked our income.

We believe in this. We believe in the people. We believe in the power of journalism.

To be upfront, we aren’t sure if we’ll be able to do the second leg of the trip if we don’t raise enough money. This means we won’t be able to report with updates on Breonna Taylor (interviews with her family) and structural racism in Louisville evictions, and beyond. We won’t be able to head to West Virginia to EXPOSE Joe Manchin, reporting on what the people he’s supposed to be protecting are facing.

But I KNOW we can get there, with your help. Please, if you’re able to help support the cost of this trip at any amount, know that it makes a difference during these historic times. Know that…

If we don’t do this reporting in the way only WE do it, no one will

Help get the stories of the people out into the world by supporting this reporting road trip at any amount. We have a goal of raising $6,000 for this trip before we head home–this is the cost of not just sitting in the studio, of getting out WITH THE PEOPLE. Absolutely any amount would help us and keeps us reporting.

Hey friends! Today, we’re in Philadelphia to start this reporting road trip off the right way. We’re interviewing a local organizer who works with the houseless community and fights for those without traditional living structures. Sadly, this is a situation that has gotten worse with the COVID pandemic and lack of real help from those in Washington.

We’ll update you very soon! Join our email list at http://statuscoup.pub/email to keep up with us every step of the way.

Update:

We did our first livestream of the trip with Veronica from Club Sandwich Philly. She has a touching personal story and dedicates her life to supporting her friends who don’t live in traditional housing structures.

Here’s a link to watch:

After the livestream,  a gentleman–Kazeem–was standing by and Jordan interviewed him. It was an INCREDIBLY powerful interview that we will publish tomorrow. Kazeem’s story is heartbreaking.

When we were driving back to the hotel, we drove through such incredible devastation. Words can’t describe this–what America is letting happen to its people.

Tuesday, June 15th Update

Hey there,

Today,  we were able to feature some incredible interviews.

We started the day off premiering the interview we mentioned yesterday with Kazeem, a construction worker who has been out of work and houseless for over a year. This is one of the most heartbreaking interviews we’ve ever done and I encourage you to watch and share it.

Jordan also interviewed Professor Sena and law student Delaney Keefe, who are suing the city of Philadelphia on behalf of the unhoused. This is a very powerful and important interview on what’s ACTUALLY happening in Philly (and across the country).

On a different topic, Jordan interviewed congressional candidate Salem Snow and his partner Zane, who faced LGBTQ discrimination when working at Applebee’s in the city.

Wednesday, June 16th Update

We woke up extremely early this morning after getting very little sleep because there was a chance the police were going to start sweeping the houseless out (taking their things and making them leave) the Kensington area of Philly. There were protesters protesting the city:

There was a police presence, but fortunately, there was no sweep today.

Jordan went live from the scene:

Here are some photos we took:

Thursday, June 17th Update

Today was a VERY exciting day. We left Philadelphia but wanted to meet up with Kazeem (the houseless gentleman Jordan interviewed a couple of days ago) first to give him a prepaid phone and some other things–and to further connect him with someone who has a job offer for him.

We walked around the park in Kensington for a while, asking if anyone knew where he was–there are probably 100 houseless folks in the park–but no one had seen him that day. FINALLY, someone saw him and brought him over to us.

Here’s where we talk about what happened:

We are so thrilled we were able to find Kazeem and do another interview and that things are looking up for him. This is why REAL REPORTING matters.

Thursday, June 17th Update

Today, Jordan interviewed Nina Turner, who is running for Congress in Ohio’s 11th district.

We didn’t have much time with her but he was able to ask some very important questions.

Friday, June 18th Update

Today, we reported from a DSA of Cleveland Canvass where they drove and walked around, in the rain, to let those with evictions filed against them what resources are available. It’s absurd that the city doesn’t do this work, leaving it to unassociated volunteers.

We’ll be posting this reporting very soon! Here’s a (bad audio because it’s just an iPhone snippet!) sneak peek:

We are out here doing the work! THANK YOU so much to our viewers and supporters–you’re the only reason we’re able to do the reporting we do.

We’re also posting segments from Jordan’s interview with Nina Turner, which has generated a lot of discussion!

Sunday, June 20th Update

Good news! We’re going onward to Lousiville, Kentucky to report on Breonna Taylor. This was a major goal of ours because her name has fallen out of the media, and she has not gotten justice.

We stayed in Columbus, Ohio today as we continue onward and book interviews to come.

Here are some new videos we’ve posted from this road trip:

Monday, June 21st Update

We’re on our way to Lousiville, KY today to report on evictions as well as the police murder of Breonna Taylor. On the drive, Jordan and Jenn addressed the backlash and discussion surrounding the Nina Turner interview.

We’re so excited about the work we’re going to do in Louisville. We’ll interview folks from a mobile home park that was forced into eviction (the ENTIRE PARK!) because of a greedy developer and city.

We’ll also announce some VERY EXCITING interviews to come soon.

Jordan interviewed Josh Poe, who helps run Roots Cause Research Center, which has done incredible work compiling eviction info for Louisville, showing that DESPITE THE MORATORIUM, evictions have continued all along. He also drops some SHOCKING info surrounding the police murder of Breonna Taylor.

Definitely watch this one:

Tuesday, June 22nd Update

Today, Jordan is interviewing AB, a man who is facing 30 years in prison for something he says he didn’t do. As an active and vocal protester for Justice for Breonna Taylor, he’s faced a lot of harassment. He’s also facing eviction.

ANNOUNCEMENT! Jordan will be interviewing Breonna Taylor’s aunt Bianca Austin today at 7:30 pm eastern! Definitely sign up for text alerts so you know when we’re live: http://StatusCoup.com/text

Update:

Jordan got a fantastic interview with Breonna Taylor’s aunts:

It’s been a busy day! He’s also interviewed Jecorey Arthur, Louisville Councilmember.

Here’s an incredible interview with AB, Louisville resident and activist.

This beautiful art of Breonna Taylor stands in AB’s church.

The city has these signs up of Breonna Taylor, but activists say they need to do so much more for justice for Breonna.
